Taxidermy. Heaven can Wait. The Art of Preservation
Schlossmuseum Linz / 25. Mar. 2021 till 03. Oct. 2021
Date of the exhibition: 25 March – 03 Octoer 2021
Steinbrener / Dempf & Huber
The artist collective Steinbrener/ Dempf & Huber is making use of the extensive collection of taxidermy mounts of the OÖ Landes-Kultur GmbH and staging these in huge dioramas in the Schlossmuseum. The scenes show utopian, partially grotesque visions of the future, which explore how the precarious relationship between civilisation and nature might develop in the future. There can never be merely one answer to the question of the future; just one slight change of perspective makes it clear that one person's paradise can be another person's hell.
The art of taxidermy
Parallel to this is the nature exhibition one floor above, which deals with the scientific methods of taxidermy and preservation. The taxidermy mount is not only used for the exhibition, it also performs a function for research. You will learn what types of taxidermy there are, how they are preserved and what purposes they serve. You can watch our taxidermists at work, learn how beetles are used to clean bones and get a historical overview of the development of this discipline.
With these two exhibitions, the museum is transformed into a multi-disciplinary epistemic space, making use of its various collections and fields of knowledge and enabling different perspectives on a subject by interweaving scientific research with artistic-philosophical models of thought and visual worlds.
