LA BOHÈME. Toulouse-Lautrec AND THE MASTERS OF MONTMARTRE
FC - Francisco Carolinum / 17. Oct. 2019 till 26. Jan. 2020
At the end of the 19th century, posters emerged in Paris which fascinated both art critics and the public, giving rise to a veritable poster craze, known as affichomanie. Wellknown artists created expressive lithographies for Dance halls, events and a wide variety of products. The selection of
works is presented in six subject areas, including Chanson & Cancan, Circus & Cabaret, Publicity & Advertising as well as Novellas and Journals.
Outstanding examples are the modern subjects of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec whose studies of Parisian life became icons of art at the turn of the century. The exhibition Displays his entire poster œuvre in juxtaposition with works by his contemporaries and predecessors. The exhibition is supplemented by exhibits from the Landesgalerie which help to throw more light on the atmosphere in Parisian Montmartre.
With works by:
Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen, Alfons Mucha, Jules Chéret, Eugène Grasset, Pierre Bonnard, Adolphe Léon Willette, Félix Vallotton, etc.
The exhibition was created in collaboration with the Musée d‘Ixelles, Brussels and the Institut für Kulturaustausch, Tübingen.
Also on display at the Landesgalerie are:
